Second-hand Jura E8, S8, Z8 and Z10: what to check before you buy
Short answer: every second-hand Jura needs the same core tests: rinse, grinder, two espressos, a milk drink, the drip tray and the display. On top of that, check the feature that makes each model worth its price: the frother on an E8, the milk system on an S8 or Z8, and the cold brew cycle on a Z10. Walk away from any machine that leaks, grinds badly or throws repeat errors.
- Our rebuilt prices at the time of writing: E8 $1,049, S8 $1,495, Z8 $1,549, Z10 $2,549.
- Private listings usually sit only a few hundred dollars below those figures, before any service.
- The E8 we sell is the EB-series with a 2.8" colour display and 17 drinks. The Z8 is discontinued. The Z10 adds hot and cold brew.
- Rebuilt machines carry a 12-month warranty on the rebuilt internals.
The five tests for any second-hand Jura
- Watch the rinse. Water should go into the drip tray only. Water anywhere else means a leak.
- Listen to the grinder. It should sound even. Metallic noise means damage.
- Make two espressos. The first should pour steadily with crema. After the second, check the drip tray for more water than a rinse explains.
- Make a milk drink. Foam should be hot and textured, with no sour smell from the spout.
- Read the display. A machine asking for cleaning or descaling has not had it. A repeat error after a restart is a fault.
The full pickup routine and the table of symptoms and causes are in the guide to what goes wrong with a secondhand Jura.
Jura E8: what to check
The E8 is the machine most people are shopping for. It makes 17 drinks, has a 2.8-inch colour display and the Professional Aroma Grinder, and uses the Fine Foam Frother G2. Check that the frother produces dense foam and that the spout is clean inside, because milk residue is the most common neglect. Run a few drinks of different sizes to confirm the grinder keeps up, and check the tank seats properly and does not weep. A hopper that bridges and gives a false fill beans warning usually means oily beans. Our refurbished E8 is $1,049 at the time of writing, and there is more detail in the E8 review and second-hand E8 checklist.
Jura S8: what to check
The S8 is a milk-drink machine, so spend your testing time there. Make a cappuccino and a flat white back to back. Watch for the cycle stalling, uneven foam, or a rinse that leaves milk behind. Open the grounds container after the second drink. Wet sludge points to a tired brew unit. The refurbished S8 is $1,495 at the time of writing. How it compares with the E8 is covered in E8 vs S8.
Jura Z8: what to check
The Z8 is a discontinued flagship, which is part of its appeal as a used buy and part of the risk, since you want a seller who can show it has been looked after. Test the full range of drinks the seller says it makes, not just espresso. Run a long milk cycle and confirm the machine heats evenly and the coffee does not turn lukewarm, which can be scale. Our refurbished Z8 is $1,549 at the time of writing; see the Z8 review.
Jura Z10: what to check
The Z10 makes hot and cold brew, so test both. Run a cold brew and a hot espresso, check that the cold brew completes without errors, and check the milk system as you would on any model. Because it is the most expensive of the four, a private Z10 is where an unserviced machine costs the most to put right. Our refurbished Z10 is $2,549 at the time of writing, and there is a model-specific guide on buying a used Z10 in Melbourne.
Quick comparison
| Model | Extra thing to test | Our rebuilt price |

When to walk away
- The seller will not let you make coffee and milk.
- There is water pooling inside or under the machine.
- The grinder sounds like it is chewing metal.
- An error returns after a restart.
- The price is far below comparable listings.
The honest case against buying ours
A rebuilt machine costs more than a private one. It still shows cosmetic wear. The warranty excludes the external milk frother and externals such as the drip tray, tank and covers. And if you change your mind inside 14 days you pay the return freight and up to 15% restocking. If you can test in person and are happy to book a service, a private machine can still make sense. If you are not sure which model you need, the 60-second quiz helps.

Frequently asked questions
What should I check on a second-hand Jura E8?
The rinse, grinder noise, two espressos, the frother and milk spout, the drip tray for leaks, and the display for errors or maintenance prompts.
Is a second-hand Jura S8 worth buying?
It can be if it has been serviced and the milk system has been kept clean. Test back-to-back milk drinks and look at the grounds container.
Is the Jura Z8 still worth buying second-hand?
It is discontinued, so most are used. A well-kept or rebuilt Z8 is good value, but test the full drink menu and the heating.
How do I test a used Jura Z10?
Run a hot espresso, a cold brew and a milk drink, and check for leaks, errors and sour smells from the milk system.
How much cheaper is a private Jura than a rebuilt one?
Usually by a few hundred dollars on the day, before the service a private machine often needs.
