Jura Z8 review: why a discontinued flagship is the smart refurbished buy

Short answer: the Z8 was Jura’s home flagship until the Z10 replaced it, and refurbished it is one of the best-value machines in our range: a 4.3-inch touchscreen, pulsed extraction, a dual spout for two coffees at once, a 2.4-litre tank and Jura’s full one-touch milk menu, for around $1,549 against its last RRP of about $3,990. Discontinued means Jura no longer makes it – not that parts are scarce or that we cannot service it. Every wearing part is available and every Z8 we sell has a new brew unit and a 12-month warranty.

Key facts

  • Around 21 programmed specialities on a 4.3-inch colour touchscreen, with strength, volume, temperature and milk adjustable and saveable.
  • Pulse Extraction Process, Aroma G3 grinder, one-touch milk with automatic rinse, and a height-adjustable dual spout that pours two coffees together.
  • About 2.4-litre tank and 280g hopper – more capacity than the E8 and S8, which is why the Z8 suits busy households and home offices.
  • Refurbished around $1,549 at the time of writing (last RRP about $3,990); 12-month warranty; $50 freight or free Melbourne pickup; Afterpay and PayPal Pay in 4 available.

What discontinued actually means

Jura replaced the Z8 with the Z10 in its range, so new Z8s are no longer sold. That is all. Jura keeps supplying parts for its machines for many years after discontinuation – we still service Impressa models from more than a decade earlier – and the Z8’s brew unit, pump, grinder, valves and seals are all current stock in our workshop. A refurbished Z8 is serviced exactly like a current model, carries the same 12-month warranty, and will still be serviceable in ten years. What you give up against a Z10 is cold brew and the newer self-adjusting grinder. What you gain is a flagship for a mid-range price.

What the Z8 does well

The coffee

Pulsed extraction, the same technology as the E8, S8 and Z10, so short drinks are full and long blacks are excellent. The Aroma G3 grinder is a generation older than the Z10’s but still quiet and consistent, and it wants the same dry medium-roast beans – best beans for Jura machines.

The milk and the spout

The full one-touch menu – flat white, cappuccino, latte macchiato and more – with the milk system rinsing itself after every drink. The dual spout makes two identical coffees at once, which in a household of two coffee drinkers saves a minute every morning and is a feature the E8 and S8 do not have.

Capacity

The 2.4-litre tank and larger grounds container are why we point busy households and home offices at the Z8 over an S8: fewer refills, fewer empties, and a duty cycle with headroom.

The screen

Same idea as the S8: a 4.3-inch colour touchscreen with saved drinks and clear maintenance prompts. The Z8 manual and care guide covers the routine and what the messages mean.

What it does not do

  • Cold brew. That arrived with the Z10.
  • Adjust its own grind between drinks – the Z10’s Product Recognising Grinder does that; the Z8’s Aroma G3 is set once, manually.
  • Look new. Ours are used; we send photos of the exact machine, marks included, before it ships.
  • Run a real office. Home office or small team yes; above 30 cups a day, the WE8 or X8.

Buying a refurbished Z8

Brew unit replaced, every seal and O-ring renewed, steam assembly refitted, pumps resealed and pressure tested, sensors and ceramic valve tested, grinder recalibrated with new brushes, boilers descaled, water circuit flushed, then a run with real coffee. Twelve-month warranty on those internals with freight both ways on accepted claims. We sell out of Z8s regularly, so if the product page shows one in stock, that is the one you would receive – our process.

Who should buy the Z8

Anyone who wanted an S8 but drinks enough coffee to want the bigger tank; households of two who will use the dual spout every morning; home offices; and anyone who likes the idea of a flagship at the price of a mid-range machine and does not need cold brew.
