Jura S8 review: the touchscreen Jura for households with different orders
Short answer: the S8 is an E8 with a 4.3-inch colour touchscreen and the ability to save everyone’s drink exactly the way they like it. The coffee is the same – pulsed extraction, Professional Aroma Grinder, Fine Foam Frother G2 – so buy it for the screen and the saved drinks, not for better espresso. It suits a busy household where four people want four different coffees, or a home office where the machine is used all day. Refurbished it is around $1,495 against a new RRP of about $3,300, with a new brew unit and a 12-month warranty.
- 4.3-inch colour touchscreen with around 15 programmable specialities, each adjustable for strength, volume, temperature and milk, and saveable as a personal drink.
- Same extraction and milk as the E8: Pulse Extraction Process, Professional Aroma Grinder, Fine Foam Frother G2 with automatic milk rinse.
- Capacity: about 1.9-litre tank, 280g hopper, 16-puck grounds container – comfortable to around 20 cups a day.
- Refurbished around $1,495 at the time of writing (new RRP about $3,300); 12-month warranty; $50 freight or free Melbourne pickup.
What you are paying for over an E8
Three things. The touchscreen, which makes changing a drink obvious rather than a matter of menus and buttons. Saved drinks – a strong flat white for one person, a long black at a lower temperature for another, a weaker latte for a third, each a single tap. And a more finished look on the bench, with a rotary selector alongside the screen. In our workshop the S8 and E8 are the same machine underneath; the extra money is convenience, and for the right household it is worth every dollar. If nobody in the house will ever save a drink, buy the E8 and keep the difference – E8 vs S8 compared.
What the S8 does well
Mixed orders
This is the S8’s reason to exist. Once each person’s drink is saved, the machine makes exactly their coffee without anyone adjusting anything, which stops the household argument about strength and stops the machine drifting to whatever the last person set.
The coffee and milk
Identical to the E8, which is to say very good: full short shots from the pulsed extraction, consistent fine foam from the G2 frother, and a milk system that rinses itself after each drink. Dry medium-roast beans, as with every Jura – best beans for Jura machines.
The maintenance screen
The touchscreen shows exactly what the machine wants – filter, cleaning, descaling, milk rinse – with pictures rather than icons, which is why S8 owners tend to keep on top of maintenance. The S8 manual and care guide covers the schedule.
What it does not do
- Better espresso than an E8. Same grinder, same extraction, same frother.
- Cold brew. That is the Z10, at a higher price.
- Office volume. Around 20 cups a day is the comfortable ceiling; above that the WE8 is built for it.
- Look new. Ours are used and show it; we send photos of the exact machine before it ships.
S8 vs the alternatives
| Against | Where the S8 wins | Where the other wins |
|---|---|---|
| Jura E8 | Touchscreen, saved personal drinks | E8 is around $450 cheaper for the same coffee |
| Jura Z8 | Newer-generation grinder and frother | Z8 has a bigger tank and dual spout – Z8 review |
| Jura Z10 | Around $450 cheaper | Z10 adds cold brew, the automatic grinder and Jura’s best milk |
| Breville Barista Touch (new) | One press, self-cleaning, 10–15 year life | Breville makes denser milk by hand if you learn it |
Buying a refurbished S8
Same rebuild as every machine we sell: brew unit replaced, every seal and O-ring renewed, steam assembly refitted, pumps resealed and pressure tested, sensors and ceramic valve tested, grinder recalibrated with new brushes, boilers descaled, water circuit flushed, then a run with real coffee. Twelve-month warranty on those internals, freight both ways on accepted claims, and photos plus a video of your actual machine before it leaves – our process.
Who should buy the S8
Households where people drink different coffees; anyone who wants a touchscreen; a home office or small studio where the machine works all day. If everyone drinks the same flat white, the E8 is the smarter spend. If you want cold brew or the best milk Jura makes, look at the Z10.
