Jura Z10 review: hot and cold brew, and Jura’s best milk
Short answer: the Z10 is the top of Jura’s home range and the one machine here that does something the others cannot: genuine cold-brew extraction from the same beans, at the same button, alongside 30-odd hot drinks. Its Product Recognising Grinder adjusts itself to the drink, its 2.4-litre tank suits a busy household or a small office, and its milk foam is the finest Jura makes. Refurbished it is around $2,549 against a new RRP of about $4,850, with a new brew unit and a 12-month warranty. If you will not use cold brew, the E8 or S8 makes the same hot coffee for less.
- 32 programmed specialities including cold brew – Jura’s Cold Extraction Process pulses cold water through the grounds at high pressure for a real cold brew in minutes, not hours.
- Product Recognising Grinder: a high-speed grinder that changes its grind automatically between hot and cold drinks and holds its setting.
- 4.3-inch colour touchscreen, about 2.4-litre tank, 280g hopper, 16-puck grounds container – capacity for a home office or a small team.
- Refurbished around $2,549 at the time of writing (new RRP about $4,850); 12-month warranty; $50 freight or free Melbourne pickup. Afterpay and PayPal Pay in 4 cover machines up to $2,000, which is below the Z10’s current price.
What the Z10 does that nothing else here does
Cold brew
Every other automatic makes iced coffee by cooling hot espresso, which tastes like cold hot coffee. The Z10 extracts cold: the Cold Extraction Process pushes cold water through the grounds in pulses under high pressure and produces a smooth, sweet, low-acid cold brew and cold-brew milk drinks in about the time a hot espresso takes. In a Melbourne summer this is the feature that sells the machine, and it is the reason to buy it over an S8.
The grinder
The Product Recognising Grinder is faster and quieter than the grinders on the E8 and S8, and it adjusts its own grind for the drink selected – finer for cold extraction, back again for hot. It holds its setting for years and, like every Jura grinder, wants dry medium-roast beans – best coffee beans for Jura machines.
The milk
The Z10’s milk system produces the finest, most consistent foam in Jura’s range, hot or cold, and rinses itself after every drink. Flat whites are closer to café texture here than on any other automatic we service.
Capacity and build
A 2.4-litre tank and a taller grounds container mean fewer refills; the Z10 comfortably runs a home office or a team of ten. Every wearing part is serviceable, and it is a current-generation machine, so parts supply is excellent.
What it does not do
- Make better hot espresso than an E8 or S8. The pulsed extraction is the same; the cold brew, grinder and milk are the upgrades.
- Justify itself for a household that only drinks hot flat whites. That household should buy the S8 and bank the difference.
- Replace an office machine. Above about 30 cups a day the WE8 and X8 have the duty cycle.
- Look new. Ours are used; we send photos of the exact machine before it ships.
Z10 vs the alternatives
| Against | Where the Z10 wins | Where the other wins |
|---|---|---|
| Jura S8 | Cold brew, faster self-adjusting grinder, better milk, bigger tank | S8 is around $1,050 cheaper for the same hot coffee – S8 review |
| Jura Z8 | Cold brew, newer grinder, current model | Z8 is around $1,000 cheaper – Z8 review |
| Jura GIGA 5 | Cold brew, modern touchscreen, smaller footprint | GIGA 5 has two grinders and makes two drinks at once |
| New Jura Z10 | Around $2,300 cheaper with a new brew unit | New has a perfect case and the manufacturer’s warranty |
Buying a refurbished Z10
Every Z10 we sell has had its brew unit replaced, every seal and O-ring renewed, the steam assembly refitted, the pumps resealed and pressure tested, the sensors and ceramic valve tested, the grinder recalibrated, the boilers descaled and the water circuit flushed, then a run with real coffee – hot and cold – before sign-off. Twelve-month warranty on those internals, freight both ways on accepted claims. If you are looking at a private-sale Z10 instead, our used Z10 checklist lists the six things to test, and the Z10 manual and care guide covers looking after the cold-brew system.
Who should buy the Z10
Anyone who wants cold brew without a second appliance; households that care about milk texture; home offices and small businesses that want the best home Jura with capacity to spare; and anyone who simply wants the top of the range at a refurbished price. For hot-only households on a budget, the S8 or E8.
