Used Jura Z10 in Melbourne: what to check before you buy
Short answer: A used Z10 is worth it only if it passes six checks: maintenance counters showing regular cleaning, a smooth cold brew, a clean espresso, hot fine milk foam with no leaks, a steady grinder, and service history. If a private seller cannot show these, a refurbished Z10 with warranty is the safer buy.
- Cold brew is the first thing scale and wear affect — always test it.
- Jura counters show drinks made versus cleaning cycles run.
- Leaks under the tray usually mean perished seals.
- Refurbished Z10s cost more than private sales but come serviced and warranted.
Why buy a used Jura Z10 at all?
The Z10 is Jura’s hot and cold brew machine and one of the most expensive home models it makes. Second hand, it drops a long way below new, which puts cold brew, automatic grind adjustment and Jura’s best milk texture within reach. The catch is that a tired Z10 is also expensive to put right, so the checks below matter more than on a cheaper machine.
What should I check before buying a used Z10?
1. Ask for the maintenance counters
Jura machines record how many drinks they have made and how many cleaning and descaling cycles have run. A high drink count with very few cleaning cycles is a warning sign. Ask the seller to photograph the maintenance or statistics screen.
2. Watch a cold brew and a hot espresso
Cold brew is the first thing scale and a worn system affect. It should run steadily and taste smooth, not thin and sour. Then pull an espresso — it should have a fine, even crema.
3. Make a milk drink and look underneath
Foam should be fine and hot. Afterwards, check under the machine and around the drip tray for water. Leaks usually mean perished seals.
4. Listen to the grinder
The Z10 adjusts its grind for each drink. Grinding noises that change sharply, stall or rattle suggest a stone or a sticking adjustment.
5. Check the filter and bean habits
Ask what beans were used. Years of very oily dark roasts clog the grinder adjustment. Ask whether a filter was used or it was descaled on time.
6. Get the paperwork
Proof of purchase and any service invoices. Without history you are buying on trust.
Marketplace Z10 or refurbished Z10?
| Private sale (Marketplace, Gumtree) | Refurbished from a workshop | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Lowest | Higher than private, well under new |
| Internal service | Unknown | Stripped, seals replaced, tested |
| Warranty | None | Parts and labour warranty |
| Cold brew tested | Only if you test it | Yes, before sale |
| Help afterwards | None | The technicians who serviced it |
A private Z10 can be a good buy if every check above passes. If the seller cannot show counters or run cold brew, the saving is not worth the risk on a machine this complex.
What does a used Z10 commonly need?
- Brew unit service and new O-rings — routine wear.
- Milk system parts if it was rinsed but never properly cleaned.
- Grinder cleaning or adjustment after oily beans.
- A full descale if the filter setting was wrong.
If you have already bought one, a workshop service puts it back on a clean slate — book a service. Our Z10 care guide covers the routine from there.

Frequently asked questions
Is a used Jura Z10 worth buying?
Yes, if it passes the checks: regular cleaning on the counters, smooth cold brew, good espresso and milk, no leaks and a steady grinder. Without those, the repair risk outweighs the saving.
How do I see how many coffees a Z10 has made?
Open the maintenance or statistics area in the settings. It shows drinks made and cleaning or descaling cycles run. Ask a seller for a photo of that screen.
What goes wrong on second-hand Z10s?
Worn brew unit seals, milk systems that were never properly cleaned, grinders clogged by oily beans and scale from a wrong filter setting.
