Jura GIGA 5 review: two grinders, two drinks at once, office-level capacity

Short answer: the GIGA 5 is the machine for a household or small business that wants coffee volume without an office rental: two ceramic disc grinders with separate hoppers, two heating systems and two pumps, so it makes two milk drinks at the same time and the next pair straight after. It suits a big family, a home office, a small studio or a business of ten to twenty people. Refurbished it is around $2,549 against a new RRP of about $10,000, with a new brew unit and a 12-month warranty. If you make fewer than 20 coffees a day, an E8 or Z10 does the job for half the price.

Key facts

  • Two ceramic disc grinders with two hoppers of about 280g each – run two beans, or one for hot and a decaf, or simply double the capacity.
  • Two thermoblocks and two pumps: two drinks at once, back to back, without waiting for recovery.
  • About 2.6-litre tank, a large grounds container and around 19 programmed specialities on a TFT display with rotary selector.
  • Refurbished around $2,549 at the time of writing (new RRP about $10,000); 12-month warranty; $80 freight for GIGA models or free Melbourne pickup.

What the GIGA 5 is for

Jura built the GIGA 5 as the flagship of its home range – a domestic machine with the internals of its office models. Where an E8 has one grinder, one heating system and one pump and makes one drink at a time, the GIGA 5 has two of each and makes two. In a household of four coffee drinkers, or a small business where three people arrive at the machine together, that halves the queue. It also gives you two beans: a blend in one hopper for milk drinks and a single origin in the other for black coffee, or regular and decaf, selected per drink.

What it does well

Speed and volume

Two milk drinks at once, then two more, with two thermoblocks holding temperature. The GIGA 5 comfortably handles 30–50 cups a day, which is why we sell it to small businesses as an alternative to renting an office machine.

The coffee

Ceramic disc grinders – quiet, durable and consistent – feed a full-size brew unit with pulsed extraction. Espresso and long blacks are excellent, and with two hoppers you never have to choose between the milk blend and the black-coffee bean. Dry medium-roast beans in both hoppers – best beans for Jura machines.

Milk

One-touch milk with automatic rinsing, poured for two cups together from the dual spout. Foam is fine and consistent; on a machine this size a milk cooler beside it makes sense for a business.

Build

The GIGA 5 is built like the office GIGAs: heavier components, a bigger brew unit, and every wearing part serviceable. It is no longer made, but parts supply is good and every GIGA 5 we sell has had its brew unit replaced and its two pumps resealed and pressure tested.

What it does not do

  • Cold brew or a touchscreen. It is a previous-generation flagship – see the Z10 if those matter more than capacity.
  • Fit a small kitchen. It is a large, heavy machine. Measure the bench, and allow height for two hoppers.
  • Make sense at ten coffees a day. Below about 20 cups a day you are paying for capacity you will not use.
  • Look new. Ours are used and show it; we send photos of the exact machine before it ships.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Jura GIGA 5 a good office machine?

Can the GIGA 5 make two coffees at once?

Yes – two thermoblocks, two pumps and a dual spout make two drinks, including milk drinks, simultaneously.

Why does the GIGA 5 have two grinders?

So you can run two beans – a blend and a single origin, or regular and decaf – and select per drink, and so the machine keeps up with volume.

Is the GIGA 5 still made?

No, it has been superseded in Jura’s range, but parts are available and every GIGA 5 we sell is rebuilt with a new brew unit and a 12-month warranty.

How much is a refurbished Jura GIGA 5?
