Buying guide · Refurbished vs second-hand
Refurbished vs second-hand Jura: what the words actually mean
Short answer: second-hand means the machine was owned and is being resold, with whatever condition it is in. Refurbished should mean someone has opened it up and renewed the parts that wear. Listings use both words loosely, so ask what was done, by whom, and what warranty backs it. A machine that has been properly rebuilt is still used; it just has a renewed inside.
- Neither word is regulated on a listing. "Refurbished" can mean a rebuild or a wipe-down.
- On a Jura the parts that matter are the brew unit, seals and O-rings, steam assembly, pumps, sensors, ceramic valve and grinder.
- Our refurbished machines carry 12 months on the rebuilt internals. Private second-hand machines carry none.
- If you want the Marketplace pickup checklist, it is on the separate page about what goes wrong with a secondhand Jura.
The terms you will see on Jura listings
| Wording on the listing | What it usually means | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Second-hand / used | Owned and resold as found | Last service date, reason for selling |
| Tested and working | Switched on and made a coffee | How long was it tested, with milk? |
| Serviced | Some work done, scope unknown | Which parts were replaced, by whom, invoice? |
| Reconditioned / refurbished | Can range from cleaned to rebuilt | Brew unit, seals, steam assembly, valve, sensors, grinder? |
| Rebuilt with warranty | Parts renewed and backed by the seller | What does the warranty exclude? |
What we mean by refurbished
For us a refurbished Jura has the brew unit replaced and every seal and O-ring renewed. The steam assembly is completely refitted with new seals. The pumps are resealed and pressure tested, and replaced only if they are not performing. The sensors are tested for correct resistance and replaced if out, and the ceramic valve is pressure tested and replaced if it does not hold. The grinder is recalibrated with the brushes renewed, and replaced if extraction is still not right. The boilers are descaled and flushed, the water circuit and flow control are stripped of debris, the whole system is flushed, and the machine is cleaned and vacuumed out. Then it is tested with real coffee before sign-off. A few grounds may remain in the hopper channel. The full list is on the process and warranty page.
What refurbished does not mean
It does not mean new, and it does not mean the case looks unused. These are used machines and they show wear. We photograph the actual unit with the marks included and send a short video before it ships. You are paying for the inside, not for a flawless exterior.
The comparison that matters: price, risk and cover
| Second-hand (private) | Refurbished (Chameleon Coffee) | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Usually a few hundred dollars lower | E8 $1,049, S8 $1,495, Z8 $1,549, Z10 $2,549 at time of writing |
| What you know about the inside | Only what the seller says | Rebuilt to a written standard |
| Warranty | None | 12 months on the rebuilt internals |
| If it fails in month three | Your cost | Freight both ways on accepted claims |
| Consumer law | Does not apply to a private sale | Applies to a sale by a business |
| Cosmetic condition | As photographed, if at all | Actual unit photographed, marks disclosed |
When second-hand is the better choice
If you can test the machine in person with beans and milk, the seller can show a recent service invoice, and the price is well under a rebuilt equivalent, a private machine can be good value. You also pay nothing for freight if you collect locally. Be honest about the service you will need to book afterwards.
When refurbished is the better choice
If you cannot test before you buy, you are buying interstate, or you want the wear parts renewed and a warranty behind them, refurbished is the lower-risk path. Our refurbished E8 and refurbished S8 are the two most requested, and the whole collection is listed with prices.
The limits of our warranty, stated plainly
The 12 months cover the rebuilt internals: brew unit, pumps, boiler, ceramic valve, sensors, grinder, seals and water circuit. It does not cover the external milk frother or externals such as the drip tray, tank and covers. On accepted claims we pay freight both ways. On declined claims, which are usually a machine that has not been cleaned or descaled, you pay inspection, freight and repair. The warranty and returns terms are on our warranty and returns page.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between refurbished and second-hand?
Second-hand means resold as found. Refurbished should mean the parts that wear have been renewed. Ask what was replaced and what warranty backs it, because listings use the words loosely.
Is a refurbished Jura as good as new?
No. It is a used machine with a renewed inside and it shows cosmetic wear. The point is a reliable inside at a much lower price than new.
Is refurbished safer than second-hand?
Usually, if the refurbishment is documented and warranted. A vague refurbished label with no list of parts and no warranty is no safer than a private sale.
What warranty should a refurbished Jura have?
Ours is 12 months on the rebuilt internals. Check any seller’s warranty for what it excludes, such as milk frothers and externals.
Can I trade in my old machine against a refurbished Jura?
Yes. Any Jura, Breville or DeLonghi automatic, working or not, takes $200 off. One per purchase, not combinable with other offers.
