Locally roasted coffee beans, Melbourne

Short answer: Chameleon Coffee sells beans roasted in Melbourne – single origins from Peru, Brazil, Colombia and Ethiopia plus espresso blends – as whole bean or ground to order, in 250g, 500g and 1kg bags. Orders over $60 ship free anywhere in Australia, and Roasters Club members get 15% off every order.

Key facts

  • Roasted in Melbourne and shipped from Melbourne, so beans reach you weeks fresher than coffee that has sat in a distribution chain.
  • Single origins: Peru Cusco, Brazil São Silvestre, Colombia Supremo and Ethiopia Yirgacheffe. Blends for espresso and milk drinks.
  • Whole bean, or ground to order for espresso, stovetop, filter or plunger.
  • Free shipping on orders over $60. 15% off every order with the Roasters Club.

Why locally roasted beats the supermarket shelf

Coffee is at its best in the first few weeks after roasting. Roasted beans release carbon dioxide for the first days, then slowly lose aroma as oxygen gets at them. A bag from a national brand is typically roasted, packed, warehoused, shipped to a distribution centre, shipped to a store and then sits on the shelf – often for months before you open it. It looks fine. It tastes flat. Beans roasted in Melbourne and posted to a Melbourne address skip all of that: the coffee you are drinking is weeks old, not seasons old. That difference is bigger than the difference between a good machine and a great one.

Whole bean or ground?

Whole bean if your machine has a grinder – every Jura and most Brevilles do – because ground coffee goes stale within days. If you use a plunger, stovetop, filter machine or a pod-style reusable capsule, choose the grind for that brewer at checkout and we grind to order before it ships.

Which beans for your machine

  • Jura and other automatic machines: whole bean, medium roast, dry beans only. Our guide to beans for Jura machines explains why oily beans cause faults.
  • Breville and other espresso machines: an espresso blend or Brazil for milk drinks; Colombia or Peru for black coffee.
  • Plunger and filter: Ethiopia Yirgacheffe or Peru, ground coarse or medium.
  • Stovetop: Brazil or a blend, ground fine-medium.
