Short answer: under $2000 is the tier where the choice gets interesting. New, it buys a Breville Barista Pro or Barista Touch, a DeLonghi Dinamica or Eletta, or Jura’s entry ENA 4. Refurbished from a workshop, it buys the Jura E8, ENA 8 or S8 – the machines at the top of most best-of lists – with the wear parts replaced and a warranty. For push-button coffee with proper milk, the refurbished E8 is the pick. For hands-on espresso, the Barista Pro.

The Barista Pro: the pick for hands-on espresso
If the point is making coffee rather than having it made, the Barista Pro is the best all-in-one semi-automatic under $2000: three-second heat-up, a capable grinder, a proper steam wand and enough control to learn on properly. The Barista Touch adds automatic milk and presets for people who want the Breville experience with less technique. New Jura ENA 4 vs refurbished Jura E8
The only new Jura in this tier makes no milk. It is a superb black-coffee machine – compact, quiet, Swiss – and if you never drink milk coffee, buy it. If you do, a refurbished E8 at similar money gives you one-touch milk and a bigger tank, at the cost of being a previous-owner machine with our warranty rather than Jura’s. Most households drink milk coffee. Most should buy the E8.
DeLonghi in this tier
The Dinamica and Eletta Explore are DeLonghi’s best value: one-touch milk from the LatteCrema carafe, and on the Eletta, cold drinks too.
