Coffee beans · Whole bean vs ground
Whole bean vs ground coffee: which should you buy?
Short answer: whole bean if your machine has a grinder – every Jura, DeLonghi and most Brevilles do – because whole beans stay fresh for weeks and ground coffee for days. Ground coffee is the right buy if you use a plunger, filter machine, stovetop or Aeropress and do not own a grinder: have it ground to order for your brewer, buy 250g at a time, and use it within a fortnight. Supermarket pre-ground, ground months ago, is the worst of both.
- Grinding exposes thousands of times more surface to air. Whole beans peak for 1–5 weeks; ground coffee is best within a day and fading after a week.
- Whole bean and ground cost the same per kilo. The difference is what you are drinking in week three.
- Never put ground coffee in the bean hopper of an automatic – it jams the grinder. The powder chute is for a single cup.
- Ground to order at the right grind for your brewer beats any pre-ground bag on the shelf.
Why grinding changes everything
A whole bean is a sealed package: the aromatic oils and gases sit inside a dense, roasted shell, and oxygen reaches them slowly. Grinding breaks that shell into thousands of particles and exposes all of it at once. Within minutes the most volatile aromatics are gone; within days the sweetness follows. That is why a freshly ground cup smells the way it does and a cup from a bag opened last month does not. It is also why every serious espresso machine and every automatic has a grinder built in – not for convenience, but because grinding at the moment of brewing is most of what makes coffee taste good.
| Whole bean | Ground | |
|---|---|---|
| Freshness window | 1–5 weeks at peak, good to 2 months | Best within a day, fading after a week |
| Needs | A grinder – built-in or separate | Nothing |
| Grind size | Adjustable to any brewer, any day | Fixed at purchase |
| Price per kilo | Same | Same |
| Best for | Automatic machines, espresso machines, anyone with a grinder | Plunger, filter, stovetop, Aeropress without a grinder |
| Worst case | Old beans in a hopper going oily | Supermarket pre-ground, months old |
If your machine has a grinder: whole bean, always
Jura, DeLonghi, Philips and Miele automatics grind per cup; Breville Barista Express, Pro and Touch grind per shot. All of them want whole beans in the hopper and nothing else. Ground coffee in a bean hopper will not feed, jams the grinder and can mean a service. If you occasionally want a decaf or a different coffee, the powder chute on an automatic takes one cup of pre-ground at a time – that is what it is for. Which beans: best beans for Jura, best beans for Breville.
If you have no grinder: ground to order
Plunger, pour-over, filter machine, stovetop and Aeropress all work well with ground coffee, provided it is the right grind and it is fresh. The right way to buy it is ground to order by the roaster for your brewer – coarse for plunger, medium for filter, fine for stovetop – in 250g bags, used within a fortnight. Our store grinds to order at checkout; choose the brewer and it arrives ready. The full grind map is on the coffee grind size guide.
Is a grinder worth buying?
If you brew every day with a plunger or filter, a modest burr grinder pays for itself in taste within a month and lets you buy whole beans that stay fresh four times as long. Avoid blade grinders, which chop unevenly. If you drink one plunger coffee a day and cannot be bothered, ground to order in 250g bags is a perfectly good way to live.
The supermarket pre-ground problem
A bag of pre-ground coffee on a shelf was ground at packing, months before you buy it, often at one generic grind that is wrong for espresso and wrong for plunger. It is the reason many people think they do not like black coffee. If ground is what you need, buy it ground recently, for your brewer – freshly roasted vs supermarket coffee.
Storing ground coffee
Same rules as beans, applied faster: sealed bag with the air squeezed out, cool, dark, not the fridge. Buy small, use quickly. The freezer in sealed portions works for ground as well as beans if you thaw unopened – how long do coffee beans last?

Frequently asked questions
Is whole bean coffee better than ground?
Fresher for longer, yes – weeks against days. The coffee itself is the same; grinding is what starts the clock.
Can I use ground coffee in a Jura or DeLonghi?
Only through the powder chute, one cup at a time. Never in the bean hopper.
How long does ground coffee stay fresh?
Best within a day, acceptable for a week or two in a sealed bag, stale after that.
Should I buy ground coffee for a plunger?
If you have no grinder, yes – ground coarse to order, in 250g bags, used within a fortnight. A burr grinder and whole beans are better if you brew daily.
Is ground coffee cheaper than whole bean?
No, the same per kilo. Pre-ground supermarket coffee is often cheaper because it is older and lower grade, not because grinding saves money.
