Jura E8 manual: care, cleaning and error messages
Short answer: Download the E8 PDF from our Jura manuals page, then follow a simple routine: empty grounds and tray daily, clean the milk system daily if you use it, run a cleaning tablet and descale when prompted, and change the filter about every 2 months. Most E8 faults we repair start with a skipped milk clean.
- A well-maintained Jura lasts 10–15 years; neglected milk systems fail in months.
- Cleaning program: one tablet, roughly 20 minutes, only when prompted.
- With a water filter fitted and activated, descaling is not required.
- Service seals and brew unit every 12–18 months under daily use.
Where do I download the Jura E8 manual?
The E8 has been sold in a few generations, and the buttons and menus differ slightly between them, so match the manual to your machine. We keep a free PDF of the E8 P.E.P. manual on our Jura manuals page. For other E8 versions, Jura’s official support library lets you search by model and serial number — the serial sticker is usually under the machine or behind the water tank.
Below is the part most owners actually need: what the machine is asking you to do, how often, and what happens if you ignore it. It is written from the repairs we see on E8s every week, not copied from the manual.
What maintenance does a Jura E8 need?
The E8 does most of the work itself — it rinses on switch-on and switch-off and tells you when it needs cleaning or descaling. Your job is to say yes when it asks, and to look after the milk system, which is where most E8 problems start.
| How often | Task | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Every day | Empty the grounds container and drip tray; refill fresh water | Old grounds grow mould and the tray-full sensor stops brewing |
| After every milk drink | Run the milk rinse when the machine asks | Dried milk blocks the frother within days |
| Daily (if you drink milk) | Clean the milk system with cappuccino cleaner | Rinsing alone does not remove milk fat or bacteria |
| When prompted | Run the cleaning program with one cleaning tablet | Removes coffee oil from the brew unit so shots stay full-bodied |
| When prompted, or every 2–3 months | Descale (only if you are not running a water filter) | Scale narrows the heater and pipes, causing weak flow and error messages |
| About every 2 months | Replace the water filter if fitted | A spent filter stops protecting against scale |
| Every 12–18 months | Workshop service: seals, brew unit, grinder check | Worn O-rings leak and a tired brew unit makes watery coffee |
What do the Jura E8 messages mean?
Fill water tank
The tank is low or not seated properly. If it is full and the message stays, lift the tank out, check the valve at the base is clean and reseat it firmly.
Empty grounds container / Tray missing
The E8 counts brews rather than sensing how full the container is, so empty it whenever asked and always empty the drip tray at the same time. Pull the tray out for at least a few seconds so the counter resets.
Fill beans
Either the hopper is empty or beans are bridging above the grinder. Very oily, dark-roasted beans are the usual cause — stir the hopper and switch to a medium roast. Our guide to oily beans in automatic machines explains why.
Rinse milk system / Clean milk system
Do both when asked. The E8 draws milk through a thin pipe into the frother; dried milk blocks it and gives you spitting, lukewarm or no foam.
Machine cleaning / Descaling
Follow the on-screen steps. Cleaning needs one Jura-compatible cleaning tablet and takes around 20 minutes. Descaling takes longer and is skipped entirely if a water filter is fitted and activated in the menu.
When is an E8 problem a repair, not a clean?
- Water leaking under the machine — usually a perished O-ring or drain valve seal.
- Coffee that stays watery after a cleaning cycle and a finer grind — often a worn brew unit.
- Grinding noise but no coffee, or a loud rattle — a stone or foreign object in the grinder.
- A message that returns straight after you have done what it asked.
Those are workshop jobs. You can book a repair and we will quote before we start.
Is it worth repairing an older E8 or upgrading?
A well-kept E8 routinely runs 10–15 years, so a service is usually the right call. If yours is out of warranty and needs a brew unit plus grinder, compare that quote with a refurbished E8 that has already had both done. Our machine lifespan guide helps with that maths.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Jura E8 need descaling if I use a filter?
No. If a Jura water filter is fitted and activated in the settings, the E8 does not ask for descaling. Replace the filter when prompted, roughly every two months, or it stops protecting the machine.
How often should I clean the E8 milk system?
Rinse after every milk drink when prompted, and run a full clean with cappuccino cleaner once a day if you make milk coffee daily. Rinsing alone does not remove milk fat.
Why does my E8 keep saying fill beans when the hopper is full?
Beans are bridging above the grinder, usually because they are very oily or dark. Stir the hopper, then switch to a medium roast. If it persists with fresh beans, the grinder needs checking.
Can I use non-Jura cleaning tablets in an E8?
Yes, as long as they are made for automatic machines and sized to fit the tablet funnel. Descaler must be suitable for automatic machines too — never use vinegar.
How long does a Jura E8 last?
With regular cleaning and a service every 12–18 months, 10–15 years is normal. Brew unit seals and O-rings are the usual wear parts.
Still not right after the manual?
